This is definitely the most rock and roll library we’ve ever seen… and as it’s very close to Owngig towers we’re excited to visit soon to check it out. Mick Jones of the clash definitely deserves credit for making his personal archive of punk rock history available to the public and the fact you can copy various items is the icing on the cake. If you’re interested in checking it out as well, it’s here in London.

The recent resurgence of interest in cassette tapes has been something we’ve been watching with interest – being good children of the 80s. First we brought you some amazing portraits based solely in tape. Well now it’s the cassettes themselves being used in a new creative fashion. This lamp is made from the tapes simply binded together – with the light seeping through the holes, providing subtle light and not-so subtle nostalgia. Check them out here.

Owngig’s love for Spotify knows no bounds, so the sites and services that have grown up around the service have really helped add a lot to what’s already a useful service. So Spotifitunes is a worthy addition to the pack. Basically by uploading your library file to the site (there’s instructions if you’re not sure how), Spotifitunes gives you a web page filled with Spotify links to the music in your iTunes. As you can access the page anywhere, you can take most of your libary with you – and listen to it anywhere with a web connection. Nifty!

Back to 2001 with a great new mash up

So we’ve been away for a few weeks – on holiday and then away for work. Did you miss us? Well we’re jetlagged but we’re back from the New Music Seminar in New York and just want to say thanks to the organisers and everyone we met.  There were a lot of passionate and interesting people who care as much about music as we do and had a great time. If you want to know a bit more about what happened then this blog post gives a good flavour to the proceedings.

This week on the web we’ve been loving…

When we saw this musical mashup we just had to post it. OK, you’ve seen a lot of them and maybe you’re thinking that the whole concept is a bit 2001, but as it contains Owngig favourite, Rick Astley, it was a dead cert. So we bring you Never Gonna Give You Up vs Smells Like Teen Spirit. Impressive that the German DJ behind it managed to get the two songs to gel together.

On a similar remix/refit version we liked this gesture from David Bowie’s record label – providing an online mixing tool giving people the ability to remix the famous song – even on your iPhone. Of course, there’s nothing to stop you doing so with fancy software already but this site allows you to do so with nothing more than your browser.

Finally, we love a good tale of the little guy standing up against The Man, so the tale of musician Dave Carroll’s failure to get satisfaction from United Airlines after baggage handlers damaged his guitar definitely was worth bringing to your attention. The song he wrote – one of three he plans on writing has so far got over 3 million views and an official apology from the airline as well as offers of compensation from a very embarrassed company. Maybe we should all write songs over consumer rights. It would certainly make Watchdog more interesting.
